Who are the Lions?
Lions Clubs International, the largest community service organisation in the world.
Our Motto is 'We Serve'.
Lions, were, uniquely amongst volunteer bodies, one of the original members of the
United Nations Charter. The first club was founded in Chicago in 1917 and the idea spread across America, then China, and now there are about 1.3m men and women in 217 countries working together to meet the needs of communities throughout the world.
LCI does not raise money itself but is funded by donations from and fundraising undertaken by individual clubs. It responds
to world scale crisis such as tsunamis, earthquakes and drought, but also has ongoing health and welfare programmes e.g. LCIF have recently awarded £100m for 698 projects in 80 countries on the prevention and cure of blindness. For more information see Lions Club International
For a brief history of Lions Clubs in Britain and Ireland visit
Who are the Lions narrated by Penelope Keith. The story involves war time Britain, The Queen, Lions Corner House and stories of ordinary people conjuring amazing results.
District Lions
There are about 1,000 Lions Clubs with 19,000 members in Britain and Ireland contained under the name of Multiple District 105W.
Our particular District is MD105(W) which covers South Wales
plus Bristol, Bath, Avon, and parts of Gloucester, Worcester, Hereford, Somerset and Wiltshire.
Welfare projects and activities are organised at District level. An example is the 'Bob Cook' Games where a group from our Club travels annually to Swindon to participate in our District sports event for the disabled. Over a 100 competitors take part and activities range from various racing events to javelin, bowls and wheelchair racing (see Local Photos).
Examples of the benefits of such collaboration can be seen on the District website. Click on www.lions105w.org.uk
We regularly meet with our local Lions Clubs - Caerphilly, Newport, Cardiff, etc at "Zone" meetings.
